094. Wedded Bliss(ish)

[In which our heroine gets a little bit sappy, but you’ll forgive her for it, right?]

A few weeks ago, I was at a wedding in the woods where the happy couple were wed by a friend wearing a green kilt while standing (and almost slipping off) a gigantic boulder rearing up out of the earth. It was very bucolic and touching and there were many happy tears. The day was also improved by all the relatives from the “big city” commenting on the leaves changing, the vegetable garden, the free-roaming animals, and how they all got lost on the way to the ceremony.

While standing amongst the friends and relatives looking up as the couple exchanged rings and made goo-goo eyes at each other (sorry guys, it’s true), I realized that they were both ridiculously happy and excited and probably didn’t care that the rest of us were there at all. OK, the moms were probably a presence to the reckoned with, but they both looked so happy and so content just staring at each other and I realized that’s it; you’ve got to find someone who you could stare at for hours.

Upon this realization that some people really do want to spend the rest of their lives with one another, it of course brought back all those nagging insecurities about myself. Naturally, right? But let’s take the happy couple again. They are average people, not supermodels (also, how would I be friends with supermodels?), who found each other at art school (yes, they’re artsy, but they could’ve just as well been computer programmers), and then moved, bought a house, and are making a life together; they’re practically leaping towards adulthood and almost giddy about doing so.

All I’m trying to say is that despite the seemingly never-ending barrage of obstacles and Hollywood romances we think we have to live up to, happiness and love can and will happen. Finding a mate seems to me to be a lot like finding a friend; you meet, have things in common, want to spend more time together, and so you do. How many friends have you made while you were in a sour mood? Not many, I’m guessing. Just one more reason to “turn that frown upside-down,” you’ll probably be glad that you did.

More advice always welcome, let me know your thoughts!
